Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics announced Tuesday that point guard Marcus Smart and big man Al Horford are both out for Game 1 of the 2022 Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat.

Smart is dealing with a right mid-foot sprain suffered in the Celtics’ Game 7 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday. The point guard recently underwent additional treatment, and head coach Ime Udoka told reporters that his Game 1 status would depend on “how he reacts to treatment throughout the day.”

Horford, meanwhile, is listed as out via the NBA’s Health & Safety Protocols. This is the third time in the 2021-22 season that Horford entered the protocol, but it’s unclear whether he tested positive for COVID-19. He tested positive back in October during training camp.

The Heat will not have a fully healthy starting lineup, either. They’ve already ruled starting point guard Kyle Lowry out for Game 1.
