The Patriots are nearly a third of a way through signing their 2022 draft class. They finished agreements with two more draft picks on Friday, bringing the total to three of their 10 selections. Their latest signings are cornerback Marcus Jones and running back Kevin Harris.
Jones was the Patriots’ third-round pick back in April. The 85th overall selection, he was an all-conference cornerback and All-American returner last year at Houston. He projects to be a slot corner and compete for the kick and punt return roles in New England.
Jones’ standard four-year rookie contract is worth up to $4.23 million. He’ll have a cap hit of $941,264 in 2022 per Patriots salary cap expert Miguel Benzan.
Harris was drafted in the sixth round out of South Carolina. He was a first-team All-SEC running back in 2020, when he led the conference with 1,138 rushing yards and found the end zone 15 times. Harris’ production dropped a bit in 2021 as he worked his way back from a back injury.
Over the course of his four-year deal, Harris can make up to $3.66 million. His cap hit for 2022 is $755,588 as long as he is on the roster.
Jones and Harris join sixth-round pick Sam Roberts as the first players to sign their rookie deals with the Patriots. The team has plenty of time to agree to terms with the rest of the draft class – they didn’t finish signing all of their draft picks last year until the week before training camp in late July.
In addition to the signing of two rookies, the Patriots also announced the release of rookie UDFA offensive lineman Liam Shanahan. Shanahan, who grew up in Marlborough, Mass. and attended Harvard then LSU, was released with a failed physical designation.
