The Celtics responded to a Game 1 loss about as well as one can expect. Powered by Jaylen Brown’s hot start and lockdown defense on Giannis Antetokounmpo, Boston stormed out to a big halftime lead and never trailed in a 109-86 win over the Milwaukee Bucks in Game 2 to even their 2022 playoff series at 1-1.
Brown poured on 17 points in the first quarter alone, and added eight more in the second to finish the first half with 25 points on 9-of-10 shooting. Antetokounmpo, meanwhile, scored only five points in the first half on 2-of-12 from the field, as he and the Bucks struggled against the Celtics’ adjusted single-coverage defense. The C’s took a 65-40 lead to halftime and never relinquished the lead.
The Bucks did bounce back starting in the third quarter, while the Celtics’ offense went cold. Brown’s production dropped off, as he scored only five of his 30 points in the second half. Jayson Tatum picked up the slack, scoring 19 second-half points to finish with 29.
The Bucks cut the Celtics’ lead to as little as 12 late in the fourth quarter, but Tatum drained a dagger three with 4:05 left to put the C’s back up by 15. An Antetokounmpo turnover, followed up by back-to-back threes for Tatum and Grant Williams, put the C’s up 21, and iced the game as both teams emptied the benches.
Grant Williams had a huge game overall off the bench, scoring 21 points (including six three-pointers) to go with five rebounds, two assists, and a plus-14. Williams often drew Antetokounmpo on defense and frequently answered the bell. Antetokounmpo bounced back overall in the second half and finished with 28 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists, but the damage had long been done.
Boston improved greatly from three-point range as a team, shooting 20-of-43 (46.5 percent) on triples after they were 18-of-50 in Game 1. The Bucks were only 3-of-18 from downtown.
It could be hard for the Celtics to maintain any momentum they gained from Game 2, because the teams now get three days off before Game 3 on Saturday in Milwaukee. The game is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. ET start.
