Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox’ COVID issues officially extended to their coaching staff Thursday, with manager Alex Cora testing positive for COVID-19 prior to Boston’s game with the Blue Jays, according to the team.

Cora’s positive continues a COVID-filled week for the Sox, as the team has lost catcher Kevin Plawecki and infielder Jonathan Arauz, along with two staffers, to positive COVID tests this week. Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez also had a brief COVID encounter before he was activated off the list on Wednesday.

As a result of the positive test, Cora, who is vaccinated and has received his booster shot, will not travel with the team to St. Pete for the team’s upcoming three-game series with the Rays.

With Cora unavailable, Will Venable will serve as the team’s temporary manager.
