Report: Patriots to host Alabama receiver for top-30 visit
Are the Patriots about to become the latest team to reunite a successful collegiate quarterback-receiver duo? Their latest top-30 visit suggests they may at least be considering it.
On Monday afternoon, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the Patriots are one of three teams set to host Alabama wide receiver John Metchie on Tuesday. He added that Metchie met with the Bills on Monday, and then will visit the Jaguars on Thursday.
This will be the second time the Patriots meet with Metchie during the pre-draft process. They also spoke with him at the NFL Combine.
A former four-star recruit in the Class of 2019, Metchie took on a high-volume role as a sophomore in 2020. With now-Patriots quarterback under center, Metchie caught 55 passes for 916 yards and six touchdowns playing opposite Heisman winner DeVonta Smith. Last season, Metchie reeled in 96 catches for 1,142 yards and eight scores.

Metchie was on pace to be a potential first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, but tore his ACL in the SEC Championship Game in December. That may leave some teams may be weary of such a major injury, and the fact that he may not be ready to fully compete in time for training camp. This has dropped Metchie’s stock to Day 2.
However, Metchie has reportedly made great progress in his rehab. Often, teams use top-30 visits to get a closer look at often-injured players or players coming back from a major injury. The Patriots may be bringing him to Foxborough to get a better idea of his progress before deciding exactly where they’ll put him on the draft board.
Stylistically, Metchie would be an excellent fit in New England. He’s a well-rounded receiver who can play both outside and in the slot, and is an incredibly smooth route runner.
In total, the Patriots have had pre-draft contact on the record with 32 players in this year’s class. Here’s a look at everybody we know they’ve spoken with…
