The Bruins added yet another college free agent signing to the organizational ranks Saturday, with the inking of Russian-born forward Georgii Merkulov to a three-year entry-level deal, according to Bruins general manager Don Sweeney.

The 20-year-old Merkulov’s move to the pro game comes after just one season at Ohio State University, where he recorded a team-leading 20 goals and 34 points in 36 games for the Buckeyes.

Merkulov’s 20 goals were tied with Michigan’s Matty Beniers for the second-most among all Big 10 scorers in 2021-22 (and just one behind Brendan Brisson’s conference-leading 21 tallies), while his seven game-winning goals ranked first. Merkulov also ranked seventh in points, ninth in points per game (0.94), and 14th in faceoff wins (258) among all Big 10 skaters.

Prior to his freshman season at Ohio State, the left-shot Merkulov spent two seasons in the USHL with the Youngstown Phantoms, with 20 goals and 73 points in 74 games for the Phantoms.

According to the Bruins, the 5-foot-11, 180-pound Merkulov will report to the Providence Bruins and finish the 2021-22 season on an amateur tryout agreement with the club.

Merkulov is the third NCAA free agent signed by the Bruins this season, joining Boston College center Marc McLaughlin and Western Michigan University goaltender Brandon Bussi.
