The Patriots have been active in the futures contracts market this offseason. With their latest move, the team has now signed 10 players to such deals.
On Monday evening, the team announced they’ve signed defensive lineman Bill Murray to a futures deal. Murray originally joined the team as a UDFA out of William & Mary in 2020, and has spent the last two years on the practice squad.
With Murray back in the fold, the Patriots now have 10 defensive linemen under contract for the start of the 2022 season. That includes defensive tackle Daniel Ekuale, who was also signed to a futures deal last month.
Futures contracts are a device for NFL teams to begin filling out their 90-man roster before the offseason technically begins. Players signed to these contracts – which are usually low-money, one-year deals – don’t officially count against the roster total until it increases to 90 players when the new league year begins in March. Only players who are free agents at the end of the previous regular season are eligible to futures deals, including players on practice squads.
Meanwhile, the Patriots have 22 pending regular free agents they’ll need to make decisions on before the new league year begins. Here’s a run through of who’s looking for new contracts this spring…
