Patriots inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo is becoming a popular name for NFL teams looking for a new head coach. On Friday, Mayo was linked to the Chicago Bears with the assumption they will move on from current head coach Matt Nagy. It’s now looking like the Bears aren’t the only team interested in his services.
Sunday morning, after a season-ending loss to the Kansas City Chiefs Saturday afternoon, the Denver Broncos fired head coach Vic Fangio. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero then named Mayo as one of three “names to watch” for the opening, along with Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.
More jobs are expected to open up on Monday, meaning the list of Mayo’s suitors could continue to grow. In addition to Nagy, other coaches expected to be on the hot seat are Joe Judge of the Giants, Mike Zimmer of the Vikings, and David Cully of the Texans. Houston in particular is one team to watch, given the former Patriots staffers in high level positions like general manager Nick Caserio and executive vice president of football operations Jack Easterby.
SI’s Albert Breer joined Patriots Preview Sunday afternoon to discuss what makes Mayo such an attractive candidate, as well as other coaching news around the league. You can listed to that interview below.
