New England Patriots

Brian Hoyer, of the New England Patriots, looks for an open teammate, at MetLife Stadium. Sunday, August 29, 2021

The Patriots COVID issues continue, this time on the offensive side of the ball. Backup quarterback Brian Hoyer is the latest player to be impacted, and is expected to be placed on the reserve/COVID list on Tuesday, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

UPDATE: The Patriots have also placed linebackers Josh Uche and Brandon King on reserve/COVD, per Mike Reiss.

Hoyer has served as the Patriots’ backup quarterback for the entirety of the season. He’s appeared in four games in garbage time, completing 6-of-7 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown. If he’s not cleared, Jarrett Stidham would likely step in as the backup. Stidham hasn’t been active for a game this season, after beginning the year on the PUP list. With Garrett Gilbert signing with the Washington Football Team last week, Hoyer, Stidham, and Mac Jones are the only three quarterbacks on the Patriots’ roster.

Uche had just returned from a regular IR stint, and played seven defensive snaps against the Bills on Sunday. The second-year linebacker has appeared in 10 games total this year recording 10 tackles and three sacks.

King has returned to his role as a special teams player for the Patriots this year, and has been on the field for a career-high 78 percent of their special teams snaps. The 28-year-old missed the entire 2019 season due to injury, then opted out in 2020.

Because of new COVID protocols put in place by the NFL, the three could still return for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars depending on testing as long as they’re vaccinated.

Hoyer, Uche, and King become the third, fourth, and fifth Patriots player in two days to be added to the league’s reserve/COVID list. Linebackers Matthew Judon and Ja’Whaun Bentley were placed on the list on Monday.
