Red Sox legend Jerry Remy dies at 68 after long battle with cancer
Former Red Sox player and broadcaster and team Hall of Famer Jerry Remy died Saturday night after a long battle with lung cancer, WCVB reported Sunday morning. He was 68 years old.
Remy left a large imprint on the Red Sox organization with a distinguished career as both a player and a broadcaster. After beginning his major league career with the California Angels for three seasons, Remy played for the Red Sox from 1978-84, earning an All-Star nod in ’78. Remy played 710 career games with the Red Sox, most of them at second base.
Despite his success as a player in Boston, Remy will be best known to later generations of fans as NESN’s color commentator for Red Sox games from 1988-2021. On Aug. 4, Remy announced he was stepping away from broadcasting for cancer treatment. Remy had been intermittently taking leaves of absence from NESN to focus on his health since 2009.
Remy was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2017. His last public appearance at Fenway Park came on Oct. 5, when he threw out the ceremonial first pitch before an AL Wild Card game between the Red Sox and Yankees.
