In each of the last two weeks, the Patriots have added defensive backs to their practice squad, signing Elijah Benton and Sean Davis. Will they add another defensive back for the third week in a row?

On Wednesday, the team is expected to meet with a veteran free agent cornerback. Brian Poole will reportedly be in Foxborough for a workout, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Poole is in his sixth NFL season, having spent time with the Falcons, Jets, and Saints. The 28-year-old started 21 games for Atlanta between 2016-2018, then played a key role for New York for the last two seasons. He signed with New Orleans before the season but was placed on IR during training camp, then was released last week.

If he ends up signing with the Patriots, Poole would give the team some much needed back-end veteran cornerback depth, especially as key players deal with injuries. Following Sunday’s loss to the Cowboys, safety Devin McCourty said of the final play of the game, “we’re banged up, it’s tough. You would want more DBs in but you guys could see, it was tough. [Jonathan] Jones was in and out, [Adrian Phillips] went down for a second, [Justin Bethel] went down for a second, it was just tough.”

The Patriots currently have a full roster and practice squad, so a coresponding move would need to be made if Poole was to sign.
