Mac Jones says he wishes he threw the ball downfield more
Despite the fact the Patriots are coming off a win, much of this week has revolved around discussing whether or not the team’s offense can throw the deep ball.
Through two games, Mac Jones’ average depth of target has been 5.7 yards. That number ranks fourth-worst among qualified quarterbacks. Film observers have noted instances of Jones throwing the ball underneath despite having other receivers open further downfield.
During his Wednesday press conference, Jones was asked about his lack of deep shots through two weeks.
“There’s definitely times when I watch the film and I wish I threw the ball down the field more,” Jones replied. “But at the same time I’m just going to continue to do what I do and take what they give me.”
“I think it’s just trial and error. Just trying to – first of all – run the play correctly. Get it to the first read if he’s open or whatever and just stick to my reads,” Jones continued. “Plays will come. You can’t chase plays that aren’t there or you think might be there.”
Jones’ comments echo what offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said on Tuesday. “You want to be able to test those areas of the field as we go forward, but I also want [Mac Jones] to make smart decisions, I want him to protect the football, and I want him to be aggressive when there are times to be aggressive,” McDaniels shared.
There’s much bigger issues a rookie quarterback could face than little bit of hesitancy to unleash the ball down field after just two games. It’s still early in the season, and that’s all fixable. The first step is identifying the problem, which Jones acknowledges he’s done. Now it’s a matter of where he, McDaniels, and the offense go from here.
