Patriots host running back, linemen, defensive back for free agent workouts

On Tuesday, the Patriots hosted four free agents in Foxborough for workouts. The team met with running back Nathan Cottrell, offensive linemen Derwin Gray and Jordan Meredith, and cornerback Linden Stephens, per the league’s transaction wire.

The Patriots regularly meet with free agents in order to know who is available should a roster spot or practice squad spot open. In fact, the team currently has an open spot on the 53-man roster after placing Malcolm Perry on IR last Friday.

Here’s a closer look at the players the Patriots met with on Tuesday…

• RB Nathan Cottrell

  Cottrell went undrafted in 2020, and spent last season on the Jacksonville practice squad. He made the Jaguars' initial practice squad again this year out of camp, but was released just a few days later.

• IOL Jordan Meredith

  Share

  Meredith was signed by the Rams as a UDFA out of Western Kentucky this spring. Some considered him a surprise cut, as he was projected to fill a depth role on Los Angeles' roster after a strong preseason.

• T Derwin Gray

  Share

  The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Gray in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft, and he'd go onto appear in five games for them in 2020. Cut late in the year, he was claimed by the Jaguars for the remainder of the season. He split his time this summer between Jacksonville and Tennessee.
• CB Linden Stephens

  Share

  After entering the league as a UDFA from Cincinnati in 2018, Stephens spent parts of his first three seasons between five teams, including two stints with Seattle. He played 13 games for the Seahawks in 2020, then signed with Washington this spring. He was with the team when they faced the Patriots in Week 1 of the preseason.
