Celtics’ G League affiliate reportedly lands its next head coach
According to Michael Scotto at HoopsHype, the Boston Celtics’ G League affiliate have landed their next head coach. The Maine Celtics are reportedly hiring Jarell Christian to helm their team.
Christian, 35, most recently served as an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards from 2019-21. He was the head coach of the Wizards’ G League affiliate, the Capital City Go-Go, before jumping to the NBA.
A former college basketball player at Emory & Henry, Christian has coached at the collegiate and professional levels since 2009. He started as an assistant at Tusculum University in Tennessee, and also assisted at Emory & Henry and Randolph Mason. His first professional-level coaching job came as an assistant for the Oklahoma City Thunder’s G League affiliate, the Oklahoma City Blue, from 2014-18. He also had a stint as the Blue’s interim head coach.
Christian has a chance to be the latest in the Maine-to-Boston pipeline for the Celtics. Multiple former Maine head coaches have gone on to work in prominent roles for Boston in the NBA. This includes the big club’s director of player personnel Austin Ainge; assistant coach Brandon Bailey, and former assistant coach Scott Morrison, now head coach of the Perth Wildcats in Australia’s National Basketball League.
