Report: Patriots compensation adjusted in Sony Michel trade
Patriots fans woke up Wednesday morning to find out the team had traded running back Sony Michel to the Los Angeles Rams. Michel was in the final year of his contract, so there had been speculation the team could part with him early given their impressive running back depth.
Initially, the return was reported as a fifth and sixth-round pick in 2022, which would become a fourth-round pick if and when the Rams received a compensatory fourth-round selection. However, that has now changed.
According to Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic, the Patriots will now receive a 2022 sixth-round pick and a 2023 fourth-round pick. The updated return is due to “a change in league policy [that] prohibits exchanging conditional comp picks,” per Rodrigue.
For 2022, the Patriots now own their own picks in rounds 1-4, no pick in the fifth round (traded to the Raiders for Trent Brown), and two picks each in the sixth and seventh rounds. In 2023, they own all seven of their original picks, plus now the Rams’ fourth rounder.
