Report: Patriots internally frustrated with Cam Newton ‘situation’
It’s highly likely the Patriots have known Cam Newton‘s vaccination status since the spring. Yet the latest development involving the quarterback and COVID – a five-day quarantine due to a breach of the league’s testing protocols – is reportedly not being received well within the walls of Gillette Stadium.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Giardi, “there is a level of frustration internally with the Cam Newton situation.” Newton would not be subject to the current quarantine conditions if he was vaccinated.
Giardi also added that “one important member of the organization believes this has ‘opened’ a window of opportunity for rookie Mac Jones.” Including yesterday’s session, Jones will have at least three practices without Newton on the field.
Asked about Newton’s situation before practice Friday morning, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick repeatedly referred to the statement the team released on Monday. However, he did add that he expects Newton back for practice on Thursday, “if that’s the time frame.”
The Patriots will hold a traditional training camp practice Tuesday morning. That will be followed by joint practices with the New York Giants Wednesday and Thursday.
