Patriots tight end Hunter Henry was among a few key players to suffer an injury during practice at training camp on Sunday in Foxborough.
Henry appeared to injure his upper body and left practice after checking with trainers. He did not return. Henry’s absence led to increased reps with the starters for Matt LaCosse, who is back with the Pats after opting out of the 2020 season.
Starting center David Andrews was also among the players hurt during practice. According to multiple reports, he appeared to injure his hand during a team drill and slammed his helmet in frustration on the sidelines. Andrews left practice early, leaving James Ferentz to step in at center. OL Ted Karras returned after a weeklong absence on Sunday, as well.
A third injured player who left practice early was long snapper Joe Cardona, which led to unexpected reps for the team’s emergency backups. Tight end Jonnu Smith snapped on punting drills, while defensive end Deatrich Wise snapped on field goal kicks. Wise had three long snaps late in practice during a two-minute drill, two of which were high, with a third that was on the money sandwiched in-between. Holder Jake Bailey handled all three of them well.
The most notable player missing from the start of practice was wide receiver Nelson Agholor. It’s unclear whether his absence was injury-related or for personal reasons.
New England practices again on Monday, so we’ll have a better read on the status of the banged-up players then.
