New England Patriots

Looks like the Patriots are getting Chase Winovich back imminently.

The third-year pro out of Michigan posted a picture of himself from a prior Patriots practice on Instagram Friday, with the caption “Soon.” It’s a not-so-subtle indication that Winovich is nearing a return from an issue that was previously termed “nothing major.”

Winovich has yet to officially participate in any practices for the Patriots, including both training camp and minicamp. But he was spotted observing the team’s first training camp practice from the sidelines, along with cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

It’s not going to be as easy for Winovich to get defensive snaps as it was in 2020. Second-year pro Josh Uche, one of Winovich’s former teammates at Michigan, is emerging as a potential starter at outside linebacker. Big-money free-agent addition Matt Judon projects as a regular. Ja’Whaun Bentley is getting his share of reps at middle linebacker. The Pats also got Dont’a Hightower back after he opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19, and brought back Kyle Van Noy in free agency.

So, it’ll be interesting to see how Winovich fits into the Patriots’ defensive puzzle once he returns.
