Report: Patriots tight end Devin Asiasi tests positive for COVID-19
Just a day before the Patriots’ first training camp practice, the team has had a player test positive for COVID-19. Tight end Devin Asiasi has tested positive, as first reported by The Boston Globe’s Jim McBride.
Asiasi was vaccinated according to McBride, and will be away from the team “for an undetermined amount of time.” It’s unknown if Asiasi is experiencing symptoms.
Bill Belichick addressed the team’s vaccination status during his Tuesday morning press conference. “Quite a few of them. Most of them, probably,” Belichick replied when asked how many players were vaccinated.
A third-round pick in 2020, Asiasi caught just two passes as a rookie. He is expected to compete for the third tight end spot in training camp, following the additions of Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry in free agency.
McBride is also reporting the Patriots have released wide receiver Devin Smith. Smith was originally signed late last season to the practice squad.
The Patriots begin training camp Wednesday at Gillette Stadium. Practice begins at 9:45 a.m..
