Report: Patriots players have ‘open mind’ to Mac Jones starting over Cam Newton
Patriots fans have been lucky for the past two decades in that they never had to go into a preseason worrying about the most important position on the field. Tom Brady was always the cornerstone and there was never a quarterback battle. However, this preseason the QB debate is all anyone can talk about.
The Patriots drafted Mac Jones with the 15th overall pick, but also resigned Cam Newton who had his worst statistical season a year ago. During mandatory OTAs last month, Newton was getting the first-team snaps, despite Jones impressing with his accuracy and maturity.
If the season started today, it seems like Bill Belichick would start Newton. But that may not be what the Patriots players want according to Mike Florio.
“Per a league source, multiple current teammates believe Newton simply isn’t the guy he once was,” Florio said. “Given how spectacular he once was, that’s arguably the stuff of Captain Obvious.”
Newton was once an MVP of the league, so it is not a stretch to say he is not as good as back then. He has taken a drastic step down since his prime, in large part due to a couple of injuries.
