Red Sox place Hirokazu Sawamura on 10-day IL
Ahead of Friday night’s game against the Yankees, The #RedSox today placed RHP Hirokazu Sawamura on the 10-day IL due to right tricep inflammation (retro to July 20).
To fill Sawamura’s spot on the active roster, RHP Phillips Valdez was recalled from Triple-A Worcester.
Sawamura is in his first year with the Red Sox, after signing from Japan in the offseason. The 33-year-old has made 38 appearances so far in 2021, with a 2.87 ERA in 37.2 innings.
The Red Sox now have five players on short-term IL, with Sawamura joining relief pitcher Matt Andriese, and utility players Marwin Gonzalez, Christian Arroyo, and Danny Santana. Pitchers Chris Sale and Eduard Bazardo are on the 60-day IL.
Valdez began the year with the Red Sox, but was sent down in early June with a 4.24 ERA in 20 outings. Over the last two months with the WooSox, he’s recorded a 3.38 ERA in 10.2 innings.
