Bill Russell to auction off NBA memorabilia
Bill Russell had one of, if not the most storied career in NBA history. Now, he’s putting many of the symbols of that career up for sale.
On Thursday, Russell announced he’ll be auctioning off “most off” his collection, including rings, jerseys, trophies, and more. In a video released through Hunt Auctions, Russell notes he wants this chance to “share with the world,” and that proceeds will go towards his MENTOR foundation, as well as Boston Celtics United for Social Justice.
According to the Hunt Auctions website, the actual auction will take place at some point in late 2021. Items displayed on the website include Russell’s 1965 MVP trophy, a Celtics warm up jacket, his 1964 All-Star jersey, and three rings.
There will also be items relating to Russell’s role as a leader in the Civil Right’s movement. That is expected to include materials relating to a game Celtics players including Russell boycotted in Lexington, Kentucky in 1961 after being refused service in a restaurant.
Russell says he will keep a few items for himself, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom he received from Barack Obama in 2011, as well as a letter from Jackie Robinson.
Even as Russell sells of the physical representation of some of his accomplishments, more are still rolling in for the 87-year-old. Later this year he will be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame for the second time, this time in recognition of his achievements as a coach.
