The curious case of Chase Winovich has gained more attention recently. The Patriots’ third-year linebacker was one of five players that did not show up for mandatory minicamp. He also missed team OTAs with something reportedly “minor.”

However, Winovich is still spending his summer near Foxboro, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

“Winovich has stayed local since minicamp, connecting with teammates at Gillette Stadium as the focus turns to preparations for the start of training camp,” said Reiss.

Winovich is entering the third year of his four-year rookie contract, so he’s not really in a holdout situation. Plus, he tweeted this on June 25:

It seems like Winovich is happy where he is. So, if he didn’t miss minicamp because of contract issues, he might have taken some time off to get healthy. Winovich was not on the injury report at the end of the 2020 season. He played 90 percent of the defensive snaps in the season finale.

Winovich played in all 16 games last season, recording 48 tackles, six tackles for a loss, and 5.5 sacks. The Patriots will begin reporting to Gillette Stadium for 2021 training camp in late July.
