The Red Sox infield will see a bit of a shift for Thursday’s rubber match against the Tampa Bay Rays. Before the game, the team announced they have placed infielder Christian Arroyo on the 10-day IL with a right knee contusion. Utility player Michael Chavis was called up from Triple-AAA to take his place on the roster.
Arroyo has appeared in 41 games so far this season, primarily as a second baseman. He’s hit .264 to this point, and had hits in seven of his last 10 games. Thursday’s move is Arroyo’s second trip to the IL this year – he missed most of May with a hand injury.
This will be the third Major League stint for Chavis this season. So far this year, he’s appeared in 11 games for the Sox and is batting .273.
Chavis will be in the starting lineup Thursday night, playing second base and hitting leadoff. Entering the contest, the Red Sox are half a game up on Tampa Bay for first place in the AL East.
