Safe to say that Tom Brady is enjoying the post-Patriots life.
From winning a Super Bowl in Tampa Bay to getting openly hammered at the boat parade to his apparently un-muzzled nature in interviews and appearances, Brady remains on top of the football world as he enters his age-44 season going for an eighth Lombardi Trophy. And now he’s even throwing some not-so-subtle shade toward another quarterback.
Brady’s latest eyebrow-raising moment comes in the upcoming season premiere of HBO’s “The Shop,” which features “unfiltered conversation and debate from the biggest names in sports and entertainment” and takes place in, well, a barbershop. Brady is one of the marquee names appearing in the season premiere, along with rapper Kid Cudi, comedian Chelsea Handler, and NBA player Draymond Green. HBO shared a clip from the upcoming episode, in which Brady talks about a team that turned him down in free agency in 2020 and stuck with the quarterback they had at the time. Doesn’t seem like Brady took kindly to that.
“One of the teams, they weren’t interested at the very end. I was thinking, ‘You’re sticking with that motherf***er?'” Brady quipped.
Naturally, the video instantly sparked questions of who Brady was referring to with that comment. The obvious one is Jimmy Garoppolo with the San Francisco 49ers, but he’s almost too obvious and not necessarily someone Brady would feel the need to crap on for an HBO show at this stage.
The more likely names? Think Jared Goff with the Los Angeles Rams, or Derek Carr with the Las Vegas Raiders. Far lesser QBs “blocking” Brady from the starting job for teams that were rumored to be in the running. If that’s really what happened in L.A. or Vegas, well, that’s quite an interesting decision for those teams.
Everyone who watched Brady lay waste to the NFL as the Patriots’ quarterback knew that he harbored some kind of resentment that any other QB would be considered on his level. He usually let the way he competed and performed on the field do the talking. Now he’s letting loose a little bit with his mouth. It’s refreshing to see.
“The Shop” featuring Brady premieres Friday at 9:30 p.m. on HBO.
