Bill Belichick was asked point-blank by WCVB reporter and frequent Felger and Mazz guest Chris Gasper on Wednesday whether he congratulated Tom Brady on his seventh Super Bowl win. Belichick pulled a Belichick at the coin toss: he deferred.
Opting for one of his go-to answers, Belichick responded: “I think I’ll keep those conversations privately between myself and the other people that are involved. Appreciate the question.”
I mean, that could certainly be interpreted as a yes. Not that Belichick owes it to anyone to disclose the actual details of any conversations he’s had with Brady.
But it was reported in a Peter King column from January that Kraft reached out to Brady to congratulate him on winning his seventh Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. So it didn’t hurt to ask Bill if he did the same, despite the question having less than nothing to do with the 2021 Patriots.
At the end of the day, any “issues” or “problems” between Belichick and Brady certainly got to a point where they were overblown. They put up with each other for 20 years and had unprecedented success in the NFL together. It’s a little much to suggest there’s some kind of visceral hatred festering between them even more than a year after the breakup, and that Belichick couldn’t even shoot him a congratulatory text.
But his slightly cold response to this question will likely fan those flames once again, if anything.
