When the Patriots selected Mac Jones 15th overall back in April, the pick came with mixed reactions. Some were excited to see the team address the long-term quarterback situation, while others pointed to the recent re-signing of Cam Newton and wondered if that pick could have been used to fix other gaps in the roster.
As it turns out, Newton is among those who believe the Patriots made the right call. Speaking with the media on Tuesday, Newton was asked if the Jones draft pick was a point of motivation for him moving forwards.
“Absolutely not. It didn’t make me feel any type of way because he was the right pick in my opinion,” Newton replied. “He was the best player available and that is what the NFL Draft is for…I support it 110 percent because you still have to do what’s right for the organization, for the long haul.”
However, don’t think that means Newton’s isn’t motivated. Although Bill Belichick reaffirmed following the pick that “Cam is our quarterback,” Newton said he understands the stakes that come with having three other arms with him in the QB room.
