Report: New team emerges in Julio Jones sweepstakes

Usually as a trade involving a specific player approaches, the possibilities of where that player will end up start to narrow. In the case of Julio Jones, they’re expanding.

Entering the weekend, the Patriots and Titans were believed to be the front-runners to land the 32-year-old wide receiver, with teams like the Colts, Chargers, Ravens, and 49ers also in the discussion. This was based on a number of reports, including speculation from Jones’ camp, as well as individual teams. There is also reportedly a mystery team that has offered a first-round pick for the five-time All-Pro.

Just days away from Jones’ trade window opening on June 2 (the Falcons only open up cap space by trading him on or after that date), a new team is reportedly making a serious push. According to ESPN’s Dianna Russini, the Seattle Seahawks “have had discussions about a possible trade with Atlanta.” Russini adds in addition to those talks, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has personally spoken with Jones about the two playing together in Seattle.

  The Seahawks would have to overcome a couple of roadblocks in order to pull off such a trade. First, they'd have to remedy their salary cap situation - OverTheCap.com currently has them with just over $7 million in cap space. Jones' current deal will carry a $15.3 million cap hit this season.
  
  Then there's the matter of what they'd offer - the team doesn't have a 2022 first-round pick after sending that selection to the Jets in 2020 as part of the package for Jamal Adams. They do have the remainder of their picks, plus an extra fourth they got back from New York in that same trade.
  
  Given those factors, it would be difficult for the Seahawks to put together the most competitive offer. But like many of the team's involved in these potential deals, Jones' interest could be a factor. It will come down to how much the Falcons want to honor Jones' wishes about his landing spot, versus trying to get the best return possible.
