Patriots sign a pair of offensive linemen
With OTAs just days away, the Patriots continue to fill out their 90-man roster. Their latest signings are a pair of interior offensive linemen, who will add much needed veteran depth for training camp.
Making up the duo are 26-year-old guard Alex Redmond (first reported by The #Patriots are signing veteran guard Alex Redmond, per his agent @MRHoffy. Redmond, 26, started 24 games over the past three seasons with the #Bengals. With Phase 2 of the voluntary offseason program beginning today, this is a time for teams to bolster depth charts as they transition to on-field work with coaches present.
Along those lines, the Patriots have been eyeing interior OL help, and C/G James Ferentz is back with club.
Redmond entered the league as a UDFA with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2016. The UCLA product became a full-time starter two years later.
The Patriots hosted Redmond for a workout last week, but he left Foxborough without a contract. In addition to James Ferentz back with the Patriots, the club is also signing free-agent interior OL Alex Redmond, per his agent @MRHoffy.
Redmond worked out for the team last week, was prepping for a workout with another club, but Patriots stepped up to keep him in town.
Ferentz has been with the Patriots since 2017, spending time on both the active roster and practice squad. He’s started two games in each of the last two years, including filling in for David Andrews for a spell last season.
There’s plenty of talent along the top of the Patriots IOL depth chart, even after losing Joe Thuney in free agency. The trio of Shaq Mason, David Andrews, and Michael Onwenu may be one of the best in the league. However, besides Ted Karras there wasn’t much experienced depth behind them. With these signings, the Patriots now have veteran talent with sizable NFL experience in their second unit at the position.
With this signing, the Patriots 90-man roster sits at 87 players. That includes Patrick Chung, whose retirement has not yet been made official by the team.
