Pirates re-sign Tarver
The Massachusetts Pirates have re-signed wide receiver Ron’Quavion Tarver as the team prepares for its home opener this Saturday night at the DCU Center against the Spokane Shock. Tarver had signed with the Pirates for the 2020 season but never got the chance to play due to the pandemic.
Tarver, a native of Belle Glade, Florida, signed in 2019 as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Bears and now brings his skills to Massachusetts. Pirates President and General Manager Jawad Yatim can’t wait to see him on the field.
“He’s a big, long, physical presence at the position,” Yatim said. “He’s young and we’re going to give him an opportunity to develop and learn the system. I Look forward to seeing him get to work,” Yatim added.
The 6’ 4,” 225lb. receiver played for a season at Fort Scott Community College and then starred at Utah State where he appeared in 38 games (starting 32) and in three seasons had 160 receptions for 1,880 yards, averaged 11.8 yards per reception and scored 18 touchdowns. Tarver finished his career as Utah State’s fourth all-time leading receiver and was twice named to Phil Steele’s All-Mountain West team as a third team selection. Tarver graduated in 2018 with a degree in sociology and a minor in criminal justice. He says he’s ready to get started.
“I’ve stayed prepared for this opportunity to get back on the field,” Tarver said. I’ll be more like a safety value. I’m going to catch the ball, catch screens and be a red zone threat. I can help the team in many ways. The Pirates have been doing awesome. From what I see we have a very good team and think we can go all the way,” he added.
When Tarver steps onto the field he will be reunited with former Florida school boy standout Thomas Owens. Owens who last week was named the Indoor Football Leagues Offensive Player of the Week, lined up against Tarver in high school. Tarver laughed and said, “It’s good to see him again, but they beat us.”
