Boston Red Sox

May 5, 2021; Boston, Massachusetts, USA; Boston Red Sox second baseman Christian Arroyo (39) is checked by the medical staff and manager Alex Cora (13) after getting hit by a pitch during the sixth inning against the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park.

After having just two IL placements in the first month of the season (one of which lasted less than 24 hours), the Red Sox have now moved two players to the injured list in the last three days. Kiké Hernandez was added on Friday, and will now be joined by Christian Arroyo.

The team announced Sunday morning Arroyo was being placed on the IL. He’s dealing with a left hand contusion, after being hit in the hand with a pitch in the same spot twice in two weeks.

Arroyo has been the primary starter in the Red Sox’s second-baseman rotation this year. In 21 games he’s hitting .275 and has yet to make an error in 74 defensive chances. Marwin Gonzalez will get the start at second base on Sunday in Baltimore.

To fill Arroyo’s roster spot the team recalled Jonathan Araúz from Worcester, his first call-up of the season. Last year, he hit .250 for the Red Sox in 2020.
