Since Bill Belichick joined the organization in 2000, pass catching running back has arguably been the most stable position on the Patriots roster. Kevin Faulk held down the role for the first part of the dynasty. Before he left, Danny Woodhead was brought in as a replacement. The year before Danny Woodhead left, the team drafted Shane Vereen, who manned the spot until James White took over. White, as you may guess, was drafted the year before Vereen hit free agency. With White now on a one-year deal and nearing 30 years old, and Rex Burkhead still a free agent and recovering from a severe knee injury, it may be time to add another branch to that tree. There’s no need to reach dramatically for the player - they should be able to find a guy they like without having to use a top 50 pick on Najee Harris or Travis Etienne in the first round. Demetric Felton is a logical choice in the fourth, but they could wait even longer than that and still pick up a good player. As for traditional, early down backs, we know the Patriots were checking in on a few such players during free agency. Nothing ever came of that, so maybe the pursuit is over, but with Sony Michel potentially entering the last year of his contract (pending his rookie option), it can’t be ruled out for sure. However, unlike the pass catching back, this is a need better addressed with a seventh round pick or UDFA. Level of need: Day 3
