Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman has a mission statement we can all get behind

Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman is off to one hell of an NHL start. And his mission statement is a simple-yet-effective one.

First-year pro and fourth-string Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman is off to a start nobody could have imagined.

After making 40 saves in his NHL debut on Tuesday night, the 22-year-old Swayman followed that performance up with a 31-save effort against a Capitals squad that began the night in possession of first place in the East Division. It's powered the Alaskan-born netminder to a 2-0-0 start, and with stops on 71-of-75 shots thrown at him through 120 minutes.

It's just a ridiculous start by almost every measurement. And he's got one hell of a mission statement to go with it.

"At the end of the day, I play for the Boston Bruins and all I want to do is win," Swayman said after his second NHL win in as many outings. "So that's all I'm worried about. And I'm happy we came out with a win."

Thursday was certainly different for Swayman, too, as this contest featured a head-to-head with perhaps the greatest goal scoring of the modern era, with Alex Ovechkin blasting one of the Capitals' two goals through Swayman. (TJ Oshie got the Capitals on the board with the other.) Both of Washington's goals came with the Capitals holding a two-man advantage over the Bruins, too, which only spoke to how difficult Swayman (and a great team effort) made life on Ovi's club.

And with the game behind him, and two points in the B's pockets, Swayman couldn't help but smile about the significance of beating a club with that kind of firepower.

"You always dream of it playing against the greats in the game," Swayman admitted. "And to do that also with [Zdeno] Chara on the blue line, too. That's a cool thing. But again, you don't want to get too caught up in it.

"I think my mindset doesn't change as far as wanting to win and do whatever I can to help my team win. But you said it best: The NHL. That's everything and it's a big deal. And this team is obviously a really good one to be a part of.

"I'm just enjoying every second I can while I can."
