New England Patriots

(Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports)

The details on the Patriots plethora of free agency signings continue to roll in. Nelson Agholor’s contract is the latest with new info, and like many of his new teammates is on a heavily backloaded deal.

Per PatsCap, Agholor will carry a base salary of just $1 million in 2021, with his signing bonus and roster bonuses bringing his first year cap hit to $7 million. That hit rises to $15 million in the second year, with a $5 million out for the team. With incentives, the deal is worth up to $22 million.

It’s a deal similar in structure to those signed by Jonnu Smith and Kendrick Bourne. The Patriots are taking advantage of being one of just a few teams with money to spend in a reduced cap year, by shifting most of the money into the back end of deals. With a new NFL TV deal expected soon, the salary cap should boom in a year or two, lessening the burden of the backloaded contracts.

With Agholor’s details released, most of the money is now accounted for following the Patriots’ spending spree. Hunter Henry, Henry Anderson, Trent Brown, Carl Davis, and Justin Bethel are the remaining contracts signed this year without public details.
