In the 24 hours since Indiana University fired their head basketball coach Archie Miller, some are speculating or calling for Celtics’ coach Brad Stevens as a potential replacement. One report went as far as calling Stevens Indiana’s “white whale.”
Given Stevens’ ties to Indiana (he grew up an hour from Bloomington) and the Celtics’ struggles this season, some are wondering if he would leave Boston to take what has been rumored to be a ‘dream job‘ of his. During their weekly interview Tuesday afternoon, Zolak & Bertrand asked Stevens about the opening.
“That’s nice of them. That really is,” Stevens said of the people hoping for his return to his home state. “Listen, that’s home, it is. I get it. I appreciate all the nice sentiments. It certainly doesn’t go unnoticed, and it’s certainly very kind.”
But is he planning on making a career move in the near future?
“I am not,” Stevens replied when asked point blank if he would leave the Celtics for the Hoosiers.
Back in August, the Celtics signed Stevens to a contract extension. The details were not disclosed at the time, but was described as tying him to the team “for the foreseeable future” by SI’s Chris Mannix. Indiana or not, it seems like Stevens is and has been committed to Boston long-term.
