Most of the talk surrounding the Celtics and the upcoming NBA trade deadline has focused on the team being buyers. Not much attention has been paid to the possibility of them sending their own players elsewhere.
That is, until now. According to Yahoo’s Chris Haynes, the Celtics may look to move on from Tristan Thompson just months after signing him in free agency. Haynes says the C’s “could trade their starting center” before the March 25 deadline. He lists Toronto as a possible landing spot for Thompson.
Trading Thompson doesn’t necessarily mean the Celtics are going into ‘sell’ mode. The team has been linked to a number of centers in recent weeks, and moving Thompson could end up being a responsive move to free up minutes. Boston’s front court is already crowded between Thompson, Daniel Theis, and the surging Robert Williams.
The Celtics signed Thompson to a two-year, $19 million contract back in November. In his first season in Boston, he’s averaging eight points and eight rebounds a game through 36 games.
