Last month, reports indicated the Patriots and Adam Butler had ‘mutual interest‘ in bringing the pending free agent back to Foxborough. Now, it appears the two sides couldn’t reach an agreement.
According to Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal, Butler is expected to hit the open market when free agency begins next week, and is “expected to have several teams bidding for his services.” This will be Butler’s first time in free agency.
Signed as a UDFA out of Vanderbilt in 2017, Butler missed just one game in his four seasons in New England. A pass-rushing defensive tackle, he recorded 15 career sacks with the Patriots, with 10 of those coming over the last two seasons.
If the Patriots do end up losing Butler, the good news is this is a strong year for interior defensive linemen, both in the draft and free agency. NFL free agency begins March 17, with the ‘legal tampering period’ opening on the 15th.
