It didn’t take long for the second game of a two-game set with the Capitals to get downright ugly, with the Capitals’ Tom Wilson nailing Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo with a high cheap shot behind the Bruins net.

Wilson’s blow to Carlo came at the end of what was a rowdy shift for the Washington power forward, with a pair of big hits, beginning with a blast on the Bruins’ Trent Frederic at the other end of the rink. That was to be expected given Frederic’s budding rivalry with Wilson, as well as his incidents with Alex Ovechkin on Wednesday.

But when it comes to the hit on Carlo? It was unnecessary, it was high, and it was dirty.

Numerous Bruins players could be heard yelling at Wilson while Carlo was attended to, with one player calling him a “scumbag” and another calling him out for his “dirty [expletive] hit.” Carlo ultimately needed to be helped off the ice and went down the tunnel back to the Boston dressing room.

Wilson, of course, is a repeat offender, having been suspended four times in his NHL career. He most recently got off the hook on what was an absurdly late hit on the Penguins’ Mark Jankowski last month.

Yet, somehow, Wilson was not penalized on the play.
