Alex Ovechkin won’t fight Trent Frederic, but he’ll give him the ol’ how-do-ya-do right in his frank & beans no problem.

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced Thursday that it has fined Ovechkin $5,000, the maximum allowed under the CBA, for spearing Frederic directly in the underside of the groin. So he knew what he was doing there.

Ovechkin was actually smart not to fight Frederic when the Bruins’ feisty young firecracker dropped the gloves, because that’s a horrible trade-off for the Caps. And at the same time, $5,000 will not make a dent in his wallet.

Maybe Frederic will think twice about trying to scrap with Ovechkin next time. But probably not because the kid is a lunatic. And the fans love him for it. Hopefully his two turntables and a microphone are OK.
