Finally, a Red Sox offseason rumor that doesn’t involve speculated interest in a mid-tier free agent. This time, it sounds like a fan-favorite could be on his way out of Boston.
According to Jim Bowden of CBS Sports, the Red Sox have engaged in “serious trade talks” involving their 26-year-old outfielder Andrew Benintendi. Multiple teams are reportedly involved, and Boston is looking to receive a prospect or prospects in return, with an emphasis on pitching and outfielders. However, no move is “imminent,” per Bowden.
Benintendi is coming off a season that saw him struggle initially before winding up on IR. In 14 games, he managed to hit just .103 while striking out 17 times in 29 at bats. A rib injury ended his season.
As they look toward 2021, the Red Sox have a wealth of left handed outfielders but are short at a number of other spots. Given Benintendi’s recent performance, contract situation (team control via arbitration through 2022), and their current roster composition, the 2015 seventh-overall pick is a logical trade piece.
