While Stephon Gilmore didn’t suffer a major knee injury on Sunday as many had feared, it’s now looking like he’s played his last game of 2020.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Gilmore partially tore his quad in the second quarter of the Patriots’ loss to Miami. The reigning defensive player of the year will have surgery to repair the tear tomorrow, meaning his season is over.
The good news is that Gilmore “should be able to participate in a some portion of the offseason program,” per Rapoport. He also avoided any structural damage to his knee.
Gilmore recorded an interception and three pass breakups in 11 games this season. He missed three games last month due to an undisclosed knee injury. He’s expected to look for a raise an extension this offseason, either from the Patriots or elsewhere after a trade.
Without Gilmore for the final two weeks of 2020, Patriots fans can expect to see an increase in playing time for Jason McCourty, as well as rookie Myles Bryant opposite J.C. Jackson.
