New England Patriots

The Patriots brought in five special teams free agents on Tuesday, as reported by ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

Working out in Foxboro were former Colorado punter Alex Kinney, former Notre Dame punter Tyler Newsome, former Miami punter Justin Vogel, former Navy long snapper Scott Daly, and former Virginia Tech long snapper Colton Taylor.

As Reiss noted, the likely reason for the Patriots working out punters and long snappers is to update their “emergency” list, in the event of an injury to punter Jake Bailey or long snapper Joe Cardona. Especially now, in the era of COVID-19, it’s important to have last-minute backup options at every single position.

The Pats also recently worked out wide receivers, and ended up signing one of them in former Washington wideout Andre Baccellia.
