While Tacko Fall captured headlines, the other Celtics rookie on a two-way contract, Tremont Waters, captured the 2019-20 G League Rookie of the Year Award.

Splitting his season between Boston and Maine, the 22-year-old wowed during his 36-game run with the Red Claws, averaging 18 points, 7.3 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game. His 18 points per game were the 37th-most in the G League, his 7.3 assists per night ranked as the sixth-most, and his 1.9 steals were the 14th-most among G Leaguers.

“We are so happy for Tremont,” said Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge. “He had a fantastic G League season on both ends of the court, and continued to improve all the facets of his game while leading a winning team.

“This recognition is well-deserved.”

The honor was not the Connecticut-born guard’s first in the NBA’s developmental league, as Waters was also named NBA G League Player of the Month for November 2019 and received Player of the Week honors for the week ending Nov. 24. Waters was also named to the Midseason All-NBA G League team, which is the league’s equivalent of an All-Star Team.

Waters, who was drafted out of LSU with the 51st overall pick last year, is the fourth Red Claws player to earn NBA G League Rookie of the Year honors, joining Abdel Nader (2016-17), Tim Frazier (2014-15), and DeShawn Sims (2010-11).
