On Saturday night, former Patriots wide receiver Reche Caldwell was shot and killed at his Tampa home, according to multiple reports and confirmed to TMZ by Caldwell’s mother. He was 41 years old.

According to TMZ, Caldwell was getting ready to go out on a date night with this girlfriend when he was “ambushed” by a couple of men and shot. Caldwell, who was shot in the leg and chest, reportedly died in the ambulance on his way to the hospital.

Drafted by the San Diego Chargers with a second-round pick in 2002, Caldwell was a veteran of six NFL seasons, and spent the 2006 season with New England. Caldwell was the team’s leading receiver across the board during his one-year run with the Patriots, too, with 61 catches, 760 yards, and four touchdowns in 16 games.

“I am saddened to hear the news about Reche,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said in a statement. “He is remembered for his solid contributions to our team. My thoughts and prayers are with Reche’s family.”

Caldwell, who finished his career with an eight-game run with the Redskins in 2007, totaled 152 catches for 1,851 yards and 12 touchdowns in his 71-game NFL career.
