The New England Patriots brought a pair of Canadian Football League standouts to Gillette Stadium on Wednesday, as team worked out running back William Stanback and cornerback Marcus Sayles, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
The 25-year-old Stanback was a CFL All-Star for the Montreal Alouettes in 2019 after a season that saw him rush for 1,048 yards (third-most in the CFL) and punch in five touchdowns for Montreal. Stanback, who played his college football at UCF and then Virginia Union, spent a training camp with the Green Bay Packers back in 2017.
Sayles, meanwhile, found himself in Foxborough after a 2019 CFL season that included an All-Star honor and Grey Cup championship as a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. A 5-foot-9 corner, Sayles also has some brief NFL experience to his name, spending parts of the 2017 season on the practice squads of both the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills.
These workouts come on the heels of the Patriots losing Calvin Munson off their practice squad on Tuesday (Munson was signed to the Dolphins’ 53-man roster), but could have come with an eye towards the future, as noted by Reiss, as this tends to be the time of year where teams give consideration to signing reserve/futures contracts for next season.
