ATLANTA – The New England Revolution were knocked out of the MLS Cup playoffs with a 1-0 first round loss to reigning league champions Atlanta United.

Atlanta right back Franco Escobar scored the lone goal of the game in the 70th minute.

The Revs had their chances, putting up 14 shots, six of which were on target. Atlanta goalkeeper Brad Guzan had two big saves, denying Teal Bunbury and Christian Penilla on strong shots in the first half.

The loss brought an end to a season in which the Revs turned around the direction of the franchise. The team was in last place in May when they fired former head coach Brad Friedel and GM Mike Burns.

The Revs lost just four games, including Saturday’s playoff defeat, after Bruce Arena took over as head coach and sporting director.
