The Red Sox added injury to insult after their Tuesday night ninth inning meltdown against the Cleveland Indians, placing first baseman Mitch Moreland on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a low back strain.
The move is retroactive to May 26.
The news comes as a blow to the Red Sox offense. Moreland leads the team in home runs with 13 and also has a club-best .550 slugging percentage. He is second on the Red Sox with 34 RBI.
The team also made a number of moves to bolster their taxed bullpen.
Right-hander Travis Lakins was optioned to Pawtucket after being tagged with two runs and the loss Tuesday night. The Red Sox recalled right-hander Colten Brewer and left-hander Josh Taylor from Triple-A in corresponding moves.
