After being placed on the 60-day injured list Monday, Dustin Pedroia is stepping away from his rehab efforts following his latest setback.

In a press conference at Fenway Park, Pedroia told reporters that he is “not sure” if he will be able to play baseball again. For now, Pedroia will return home to Arizona to spend time with his family and reevaluate his future.

“My knee will never heal,” Pedroia added.

Pedroia says he is not considering any additional surgery on his knee. He said the surgery that has been recommended to him would alter his quality of life.

The 35-year-old has appeared in just nine games for the Red Sox dating back to the beginning of the 2018 season. He has struggled to stay on the field after undergoing cartilage restoration surgery on his left knee following the 2017 campaign.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski said there is no timetable for Pedroia’s return.
