Much to the chagrin of human wet blanket Adam Jones, the Bruins and Hurricanes had themselves a postgame handshake after the end of the Eastern Conference Final. Cynics roll their eyes at the tradition, but I admit I’m a bit of a sucker for them. These guys just went to war for four games – well, to be fair, it wasn’t much of a battle by the Hurricanes. But it just does it for me to see these guys crash and bang into each other before paying their respects after (usually) a grueling series.
So it really did it for me to see Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour show Zdeno Chara how much he respected him in their postgame handshake, which you can watch above. NBCSN smartly zoomed in and caught the audio of the moment. At one point Brind’Amour jokes to Chara, “You can’t keep doing this!” The venerable Doc Emrick practically teared up at the moment.
Brind’Amour certainly looked overmatched as a coach in the series. But he’s not just some jackass who stumbled into the NHL a week ago. He had a great 20-year career as a player and played 159 career playoff games with the Flyers and Canes, hoisting the cup in 2006 as a 35-year-old. So he does understand and appreciate the toughness that it takes to get to the Stanley Cup Final.
So suck it Jones. I liked the moment. Fully expect him to take a giant vulture-dump on it next time he hits the air. On the bright side for Boston, all it means is that the Bruins are back in the Cup Final.
