The Brad Friedel era in New England is over.
The New England Revolution announced Thursday that they have relieved Friedel of his head coaching duties, effective immediately. The news comes a day after the Revs were steamrolled by Chicago 5-0 and less than a week after their 6-1 loss to Philadelphia.
Assistant coach Mike Lapper will take over on an interim basis. The team says they will now begin a search for their next head coach.
The Revolution struggled immensely in a season and a half under Friedel. The team is 2-8-2 in 2019, last place in the Eastern Conference. In total, Friedel amassed a 12-21-13 record during his time in New England.
The team added no further comment on the decision to dismiss Friedel.
The Revolution host the San Jose Earthquakes Saturday night at Gillette Stadium.
